If only their parents could hear…

April 9, 2008

I’m amazed at what comes from the mouths of my high school kids.  Yesterday, as we were talking about a pre-reading paper we’re doing for Romeo and Juliet, I covered one of the potential topics:  How long should a couple be engaged before they marry?

Several kids wanted to share their family member’s looong engagements.  One mentioned her father had met his “girlfriend” (her words, not mine) 12 years ago and had been engaged for all 12 of those years.  To top that, another one said ,”Well, my dad met a woman in a bar and married her two weeks later!”

His tone was one you might hear coming from a FOX host talking about Hillary Clinton.  Acid.  I paused.  Against my better judgment, I asked, “So, are they still together?”

“Yeah, and all that lady does is sit on the couch all day.  Sit on the couch and watch TV.  Lazy, that’s what she is.  Just sits on the couch and eats potato chips,” he griped.

Yeah.  Parents of young children:  start prepping now for those awkward parent/teacher conferences.

Hey, at least you get a clue of which awkward question not to ask in the one-on-ones (if they show up that is).

This reminds me of a time we went to dinner at a friends house. They offered us wine with dinner and the 4yo spouts out, “My parents LOVE alcohol….I mean it, they drink a lot”.
