I’m not being flippant this time. Motherhood IS scary. For the first time in my life, I actually have someone who does need me in a way that can’t be easily met by another person. This morning I’m heading to school early to attend a staff meeting about the death of one of our district’s teachers. She and her parents were taking a short trip, I assume, this weekend and hit a slippery stretch of road. The truck they were traveling in flipped and she was killed.
I wasn’t particularly close to her, but I haven’t been able to stop thinking of her–what she was thinking in those last moments, how devastated her students are going to be and how her family is handling the tragedy. And, I can almost slap myself for thinking it, but almost relieved that she didn’t have children of her own who would be waking up this morning without a mom.
Even before this, it’s gotten so that every morning, I fear getting into the car. This has been a very rough winter for driving, and the roads I use are still somewhat snow-covered from a snow from a week and a half ago, not to mention the ice that’s below all that white sky-poo. I worry so much about the 25 miles I travel to daycare that it’s almost making me wonder if I need to find another spot sooner than planned.
Eh. I’d better get going so that I don’t have to hurry. Be safe, everyone. I’m off to traverse the deer-infested, snow-covered highways in the dark with my precious child in the backseat.

Makes you just want to grab everything precious and hold on tight. We don’t have that kinda weather here, but it still manages to happen.
Love the HUGE hat on J. And his little hand all bundled up.

Sweet picture. And yes, motherhood is scary. I wonder all the time if everything I am doing is messing my kid up in some permanent way. And then I read stories like yours and I feel something deep for the people involved (who I don’t even know) and hug the heck out of my kid.

I understand the frustration with the icky roads!
LOVE the picture today–so cute.
I remember one of the first times driving with Minnow my thoughts were: “I have another life in this vehicle that I’m responsible for.” SCARY!

I am so with you! This summer, I was so terrified to fly for the same reasons. I didn’t want to travel with my husband because if something happened to the plane, Lily would lose us both. It makes us a bit nuts, doesn’t it? :)

I know how you feel…I rarely drive with him, but every time I walk while holding him I’m convinced I’m going to fall and crack his head open. It’s something I have to consciously push out of my head.

Beautiful photo! I know, it can be scary when you think about it. We have a lot of windy 2 laned highways around here and I’m always extra careful and try to stay aware of other drivers. We’re lucky we can stay home during icky weather.

Hi! I feel empathy with your feelings. Maternity came to me in my 40’s and I’m always afraid to stay with my little baby for a very short time. That scares to me. So, I try to enjoy every moment. Beautiful picture. Regards.

What a sweet little guy…he looks completely engrossed in the winter wonderland. Love the cap!
How sad about the teacher; it is nice that you are thinking about her. Death should cause us to pause and consider life…Life just goes on too quickly sometimes, especially for teachers. To think how quickly someone else will fill that classroom, and how quickly your school might move past this tragedy. But for a MOTHER, that seems heartbreaking. We are needed, loved, and it is scary to know that know someone DEPENDS on us so wholeheartedly. Be very safe on your winter roads!

sweet picture. i’m so sorry to hear about the teacher. be safe as you drive.
i think sometimes that life is all about the risky proposition of losing what and who we love. i read a teaching once that said, “we all must die at some point. things are only precious to us when we know they are not ours forever.” it’s hard to hear but it’s true and offers us the reminder to cherish each and every moment.
blessings to you and your sweet boy.
