Grr. How do you poor Texans deal with your state?

January 2, 2008

Why? Why does anything I send down to Texas to be processed through their bureaucracy always take twice as long as it’s supposed to (aside from ICPC, which was great–no complaints there)? Why?

It’s the new year and taxes are on my mind–as in taxes we’ll be getting back due to that totally awesome adoption credit. Unfortunately, although I applied for J’s social security card as soon as I could, we still don’t have it.

Let me give you the timeline on this whole, drawn-out affair:

  • later half of August: adoption finalized.
  • beginning of September: birth certificate applied for after untangling the mess of paperwork that Texas required.
  • Halloweenish: birth certificate recieved, FINALLY
  • November 7: social security card applied for.
  • Today: Still waiting.

Texas has to verify that his birth certificate isn’t fake, and when I applied for the card, I was told they had to verify within 4 weeks. I just called today to see when we can expect the card and number (and when I can make an appointment for our wonderful tax appointment), and I was told the still hadn’t gotten verification from Texas, yet.

What the hell, people? I know it was the holidays, but do all the state offices close down for a month or something?

Enlighten me, please.

Argh. I know what you mean. We finalized in mid-September and have not heard hide or hair about his birth certificate, other that when I called 2 months after finalization the paperwork had still not left City Hall, and, because the information was impounded (because it’s an adoption, duh) they wouldn’t tell me why.
