Today, J, is you nine-monthibirfday.
It’s funny. You can wait and wait and wait for something to happen. You can wait so long that you begin to wonder if that moment will ever come to pass. Well, J, for you, the moments we’ve been waiting for are coming all together, all at once.
While we’ve waited for you to perform spectacular feats, you’ve been quietly growing older. Well, not so quietly–you’re Mama’s own noise machine, and she loves you for it. Every morning you alert Mama to your presence with a squeal and a giggle and those happy noises continue for most of the day. Well, unless you’re complaining that it takes too long to change your diaper. Then, you cry. Mama and Dad understand, though. Being a baby is a hard business.
Meal time is usually started with your loud demands that we get the show on the road, and quickly. You love it when Mama stuffs your face full of lasagna or spaghetti baby food–although oatmeal is still your favorite. Finger foods are becoming more interesting, too, especially now that you have the use of your two bottom teeth!
The rest of time is playtime, and that’s where you’ve suddenly begun your performance. On Saturday, you and Mama spent quite a bit of time moving around obstacles while Mama lured you from one end to the other with the object of your deepest love–the remote control. You then demonstrated your soccerball-rolling prowess when you returned the baby-sized ball to Mama very deliberately, several times.
After that most exceptional play session, you retired after much eyerubbing and yawning. It seems that you weren’t quite, done, however, and continued your playing in your crib. After quite a long time of listening to your giggles and shrieks, Mama checked on you and found you’d accomplished another much-awaited skill–sitting up from a prone position.
The next day, you almost crawled…almost meaning you’re moving forward with much help from both your arms and legs, but still haven’t managed to lift your tummy from the floor.
Naps have become fewer and farther between, with your later afternoon nap disappearing completely and your other two naps shortening by a few hours. And when you’re excited about learning new things, watch out! Sleep is NOT what you’re interested in.
In fact, you demonstrated that on Sunday when you again played after Mama put you to bed for your afternoon nap. When Dad checked on you a bit later, there you were–hanging over the rail on the crib. You’d pulled yourself up!
We spent the next half hour “helping” dad lower the mattress of your crib a few notches.
The last six months have been the best in your Mama’s and Dad’s life, bun–and it’s all thanks to you. Happy 9-monthibirfday!

Well he has certainly been busy, huh? Funny how changes come all at once. And when they do something for the first time I have such a mix of emotions - amazed that he learned something new and sad that he is growing up so fast.
