Despite the rain, the sinus thingie I seem to have going on and the fact that the main attractions of this weekend’s girl activities were shopping and Cheaper by the Dozen 2, the last two days went extremely well–especially considering the events of the last two years. I credit little E, my niece, for her wonderful ability to make a one-time crappy weekend a success.
E dictacted our weekend’s schedule, from the number of hours we could shop (down 5 from 8 interminable hours at yard sales, outlet malls and various shops along the way) to where we spent our time (no more yard sales, yay!). She’s a keeper.
Positive outcomes of trip
1. FIVE newborn and 3-6 month sleepers from Carter’s, plus two cute stroller toys–a dog that barks and vibrates when you pull on him and a butterfly that rattles. I’ve also revised my earlier opinion that shopping for girls is way more fun. Girl shopping is still more fun, but boys have way more cool, bold color options that aren’t in the pink family. Officially, I’d love a baby of either sex, but as we’re a family of all girls, I’m unofficially feeling more tuned into having a girl around–we’ll see. It still would be nice to have a girl, as Little Sis think she’s going to have a girl in when her time comes in January, and it would be fun to have a little girl posse running around at events. Of course, my best cousin was a boy, so maybe it doesn’t matter…
2. A few sweet little outfits, sans hat, sock or shoes from OshKosh for a friend who had her baby last weekend–a cute pair of shortalls, a pink polo onsie and a loud pink and white sundress/diaper cover combo that was only 6.99.
3. Sheets, lovely sheets. The Springmaid outlet was there and Middle Sis mentioned the good deal she got on sheets, so I was all over it. We have a pair of sheets from Mom and another one I bought at WalMart after I discovered a huge, gaping hole in the last set we had. I knew that sometimes sheets pilled up. The set we got for out wedding was like that, but I didn’t realize we could manage to put big wear holes in them–but apparently that happens, or at least it does to us. We now have sheet set #3 and they’re 350 count. And they’re green. Yay.
4. I fibbed a little about the no yard sale weekend. We did go to two before we got the Middle Sis’s house, and I found a nice wire maze toy there, exactly like this one. Very clean. Very nice. Only 8 bucks. So, it went home with me. Sadly, we only were able to visit two yards, as the trunk was full of not only baggage and plants Mom brought down for Middle Sis, but also an activity table and plastic rocking horse thingie Little Sis picked up for herself while the backseat contained Mom, more assorted plastic toys for Little Sis and a huge plastic outdoor riding toy, which Little E loved. By the time we left the second sale, I had the wire maze in my lap due to lack of space–not that it was a bad thing, as I am fascinated by wire mazes.
So, the trip brought no tears besides the ones induced by my red, sinusey eyes and I actually had a decently good time. Go figure.

Kim says:
I’m glad it went so well for you. I’m definitely no stranger to the dread that family weekends can bring on. When we went away with my family for a week (!) at the beach a couple of years ago, it took my mother less than 24 hours to reduce me to tears.
I’m happy for you that this wasn’t one of those weekends.
